have been waiting for this novel for years & it's here!!a book with a periodic table of contents so there are varying ways to order the chapters.
the sub-title tells us it's a novel & that it's set sometime between now & 65 million years ago, the cenozoic era.
who & what's in the novel: King Charles the RagMan, with his profound, inquiring, & slightly aslant rants--a verbal Thelonious Monk--the four brothers (Brother Simplicity, Brother Serenity, . . . ) living at Ten Pines Hermitage on the Continental Divide, Coyote, wise dogs, serious cops, sticks & umbrellas, several KC's, chapter titles like "Vagary, Vagrancy, Vacancy" and "Second Hand News of the Minute Particulars", & koans (some with commentary from Ten Pines Hermitage) interspersed throughout.
Wise & funny.

To be honest I don't read many fictional tales, but when I read this book I was deeply entertained. The chapters are short enough to keep my attention without losing me. I certainly would like to sit in the Frontier and have a doughnut.
If you liked Kurt Vonnegut, you can relive him through Shaffer's Burn & Learn. And you can actually read the chapters in any order... and they make sense. Brilliant.
I will definitely pack Burn and Learn for the long crossing to Mars. Straight away the language introduces us to the magic that at this moment is setting the unsettling backdrop of eternity experienced in the front ground of our frontal lobes. Oracle King Charles the Ragman throws at us a semi-lucid field guide we must use to navigate a dusty, space-junk riddled universe while trying not to reclaim any worthless shiny things that will only distort our revelations. Shaffer's characters unveil the importance of the examined life at warp speed, never bypassing an adventure. Other things to pack for the New Frontier; a dog, a felony stick, a tuner, a Three Wolf Moon t-shirt, and some wholesome gooberitos.
Packing for Mars The Curious Science of Life in the Void
Burn & Learn is--I promise--unlike any book you've read before. Calling itself a "biomorphic bookmovie" and "unabridged encyclopedia of the Century of Technological Disaster", it's a self-conscious but never pompous, irreverent yet profound, 415 pages of observations, fables, lists, koans, flash fiction, prose poetry, ads, and more. Shaffer challenges not only your expectations of what a book is, but the very way you read. The chapters are short and addictive, related by recurring themes and unfettered by chronology. Check out some of the chapter titles "The Most Sarcastic Woman in the World", "Serendipity, Synchronicity, Stupidity, Simplicity", "Yorick's Vanilla Grin", "My Uncle Killed John Wayne First" and "Anonymous Beer". As you browse and read the chapters in whatever order you want, finding out what's on the 20th Century Missing List and how to celebrate International Time Travel Day with Reckless and his pals, you'll find yourself having more fun than you thought a book could provide.
This brilliant and kaleidoscopic novel from Eric Shaeffer is endlessly fascinating and seems to grow larger in scope with each reading. It's funny, surreal, subtle and in your face, traveling through time and space, covering memoirish humor and mythology and folklore. The book's many diverse stories weave together, all of them implying some philosophical point, like electrons racing around a particle. Fans of classic Vonnegut will enjoy this. I apologize for all of the (well deserved) hyperbole.
