Let me say that I love Mary Stewart and purchased this Kindle version sight unseen because my paperback copy is falling apart. But there is a very important element missing from the Kindle version, a whole section explaining the "at once closer and more distant" relationship between Charles and Christy. In the paperback, they are second cousins. Charles had been adopted as a baby after his parents were killed in an accident. He inherits a higher rank in the family corridor of power because his own father was senior to his adopted father (they were cousins). The family joke about marriage between Charles and Christy was to "weld Charles back into place without legal awkwardness and keep the cash in hand in the best dynastic tradition."This bugged me so much that I had to look it up in the original just to check my memory. And that makes me wonder what else is missing from the Kindle versions!

The Gabriel Hounds Mary Stewart 9780688016654 Books Reviews
Good storytelling, but her story lines are getting a bit predictable (can you say "damsel in distress finds love with handsome rescuer"?) Locales are well done, though - almost poetic descriptions at times. Always an entertaining read.
Great beach read. This is not high lit, it's just plain old fun. Romantic, even pleasantly silly. Better not dissect the logic, it's not all there but it doesn't matter. There's atmosphere, it's smoothly flows with very visual descriptions of landscapes and towns On every other page, there's that beautiful Mediterranean country that I'm afraid the wars have destroyed since this book was written Lebanon. For that reason alone, it's well worth the read.
A layered mystery set three quarters of a century ago about a lifestyle that scandalized three quarters of a century before. Entertaining, fascinating blend of atmosphere and fantasy about Middle Eastern countries most English speakers rarely get to see in the early twenty first century. Annoying leading characters recede into the background against the beauty of the author's words, but for readers who did not grow up accustomed to overlooking the racism in popular literature, this text may grate. Fair warning.
Cristobel is on a sightseeing trip in Lebanon when she detours to see her Great aunt Harriet for the first time in 15 years and finds herself in deep trouble. Inspired by the legendary Female Lawrence of Arabia, this book is a delight for lovers of the intrepid and the learned. Only Stewart can pull together history, travelogue, romance and random quotes from Gilbert and Sullivan. As a preteen I cried at the sentimental ending. Buy yourself a Blue Bead for protection and join the fun.
Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books.
On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for and in a rash moment, purchased them all.
I devoured The Gabriel Hounds and to my delight, I still love as much as I did the first time and maybe a bit more as I now have life experience and can appreciate certain nuances now that I didn't back in the day. Much of the reason I love it is not only due to a complex plot and well-developed characters, but because even her minor characters have a few details that make them memorable. Another reason is the gorgeous way she writes. Her descriptions are vivid and I feel as if I could navigate that part of Lebanon based solely on her descriptions of the geography.
This is an abridged version --and a poor one, at that, of what was an excellent novel. The worst aspect is that the explanation of Charles and Christy actually being second cousins is gone. They are presented in this version as first cousins.
Mary Stewart was the first author whose books II bought, in Junior High, in 1965. I still own them, tattered though they are, and I still read them, with great pleasure. Gabriel Hounds was no different, I bought it because my original copy had fallen apart so much I couldn't put it back together. I won't bother going into the story, everyone else who has reviewed it has covered it. Suffice it to say that the book is a true Stewart, albeit written in the late 1960's, so it has some of the speech patterns and clothes from the period. It made me laugh to discover that this read around.
There is nothing more delicious than to curl up with the book and read until you can't see straight. That's my review.
