Loved this book. Well written and great characterisation. Underlying sinister story about the reunion of two Uni mates who hadn't seen each other for a number of years. The shy, under confident friend is the main storyteller with her narcissistic, Machiavellian friend giving a tantalising taste of her own thoughts occasionally. Why does Karin want the shy Alice to meet her at a cottage in the middle of nowhere and where does their friendly attractive neighbour fit in to all this? There was much more to the story than this too! This was a very different book and I found myself reading into the wee small hours of the night because I couldn't put it down! Will be reading more from this wonderful author.

The story started out with the friendly invitation , to see old friends. Alice can't wait to see her old college friends. What happens in a short vacation really makes you think of what happened and how? Who's doing this? Very good book, I only figured out a small piece of the puzzle, the end really let it all out, nothing that you would of imagined . You will enjoy this one , very good plot.
I did not find the characters believable. I have enjoyed another book by this author so I'm not writing her off. But I found too many situations that could not be explained by the characters' personalities, too many situations in which the leading character doesn't do what she should obviously should do for reasons that are, to me, implausible. Her lack of action cannot really be explained adequately by a (formerly) passive personality and a desire to belong, as the book attempts to do.
This book had me gripped from the very beginning. What I love about this author's writing is that even when hit with something you didn't see coming there is more surprises right behind. Each character is built to make you wonder, "is it them? That seems suspicious." Brilliant.
Wow it was a good read until the end!In my opinion the ending sucked. Alice was totally used but the blackmail and such was a little too lame for me.I still don't understand why Karen had them meet at all. But...to insinuate Stuart was part of the scheme that's when I said... no this isn't the way it should have gone down. To have Alice even at the end getting screwed sucked! She had become a new person and it just got swept under the rug at the end. It was a good read in utill the end . I was very disappointed at the ending.
Not really sure how to rate this book. I did like it. I found the main character a little weird, like yeah she was your good friend, but give up already. I was happy to see how she developed and was a stronger person, but then I don't know from there. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a happy ending, or at least a semi-happy ending, which this book did not have. I do think it was a good book, but maybe just not for me.
First of all, I can not say enough words to describe A J Waines.. She is just an awesome writer..In all her books that I have read I never guessed ahead of time who the villain was..This book was a very great read and I would fully recommend you to read it. It is a very steady book, meaning that every page left me wanting to keep reading till I could decide who I thought the villain was. I got to feel close to the main character and enjoyed her roll in this book. Please give this book and AJ Waines a chance. You will not be sorry
Psychological thriller at it's finest!!! I just recently discovered this author and am already finishing my third book of hers. Loved this book! I am surprised to see no one mention the fact that it is eerily reminiscent of "a Dark Dark Wood" which I also really enjoyed. Four old friends thrown back together in a remote cabin, something is going on but what? and who? The suspense had me tearing through the pages! I would definitely recommend if you enjoy a good psychological thriller. Might I also suggest her other book "the Evil Beneath" which I really enjoyed! I will continue to look for more of this author's work! Keep them coming!
