My Review: I loved this a suspenseful read with its complex characters that had me captivated throughout. How's that for an opening line?

Pretty Baby has a lot going for it. It is a great suspenseful read that slowly builds tension as the reader is made privy to more information about the main characters, each of whom have their own healthy dose of personal baggage. It has a tightly knit plot with great writing and perfect pacing making me eager to get back to this book as much as possible. Let's just say that not a lot got done at the Bookworm abode while I read this book. Yup, this was a good read.

The characters were really well thought out and definitely weren't one dimensional. The story is narrated by three of the characters - Willow, Heidi and Heidi's husband Chris - which gives the reader a chance to get inside of each of their heads. But things don't stop there. Kubica then gives more insight into each of their lives which made me view them differently. I cannot remember the last book that had me jumping character allegiances and I loved it!

This is not a light book by any means. It deals with several serious issues - child abuse, foster care, homelessness, family secrets, marriage issues ... but they're all incorporated into the main plot seamlessly and help give each of the main characters a lot of depth.

In the end, this book had many layers, was a very well executed suspenseful read and was hard to put down for any length of time. Needless to say I am eager to read Kubica's first book, The Good Girl in the very near future.

Highly recommended to fans of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Pretty Baby Mary Kubica 9780778317708 Books Reviews

The best way to describe this book is unsettling. I do want to say that I am glad I was not introduced to Mary Kubica through either this novel or "Every Last Lie" because both of these were not easy reads. When I say not easy reads I mean they were very hard to get into.

On the way to work one very rainy April morning Heidi sees a teenage homeless girl with baby waiting at the train. She sees her again and again, day after day. One evening she asks the girl to meet her for a meal at the diner where the girl (Wilow) reluctantly shows up with her baby Ruby. Things escalate from there. Before you know it know it Willow and Ruby are staying with Heidi, her husband Chris and her twelve year old daughter Zoe. The story told through Heidi, Willow and Chris' POV.

My problems with the book has nothing to do with the various POVs or even the unsettling aspects of the book. My issue with the book is that it's just not written as well as "The Good Girl" or "Don't You Cry". I am only giving this three stars because it did take me a little bit to figure out the twist. At least longer than it normally does. In reality I think this is a 2.5 stars book. After reading the first two books that I read by Kubica I was really hoping for her other books to be as entertaining but I have been disappointed.
This is a good read. The mystery of where the girl on the train and the baby came from is tantalizing and slowly, artfully revealed. The interaction between them and the Chicago couple who take them in is unpredictable and intriguing. The characters are believable. The ending is satisfying.

BUT my enjoyment was diluted by the poor editing. To the editor People do not "make due", they make do. One does not "pour over" books or spreadsheets; one pores over them. "Impetuousness" does not mean defiance or anger. And it's a garbage CHUTE, for heaven's sake, not a garbage "shoot"! Go back to school and take that English course again. Here endeth the rant.
